DESCRIPTION:  \n \nConnecticut Community Foundation \npresents a free workshop series \nfor nonprofit organizations in the local service area.  \nThe Practice of Equity: Moving Beyond Talk to Action\nThis workshop series is designed to equip community leaders with the tools and strategies needed to drive meaningful change in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion efforts within your organization and community. Four interactive sessions are crafted to transform how nonprofits approach and implement core DEI principles and practices to move from theoretical discussion to impactful action. \nWhen? \n\n	Free Monthly Workshops will be held from October\, 2024 – December\, 2024.\n	Sessions will be held both virtually and in-person on Wednesday mornings.\n\nWho Should Participate? \n\n	Practice for Equity will be limited to 15 organizations.\n	Attendees must work for an organization serving the 21 towns within the Connecticut Community Foundation’s service area.\n	Each organization is encouraged to send up to two participants (Maximum attendance will be 30 people.)\n	Nonprofit leaders focused on building equitable and inclusive practices. This may include senior staff\, executive directors\, and board members.\n\nCommitment: \n\n	Participants should be committed to developing actionable and contextual equity goals to advance their organization’s work.\n	Participants must attend all four sessions\, including two in-person and two virtual sessions.\n\nWhat to Expect: \nThis series is for intentional leaders seeking to instill the principles of diversity\, equity and inclusion in their organizations in a practical\, contextual and actionable way. Participants will learn to expand\, shift\, and grow their leadership skills while holding complex diversity\, equity\, and inclusion issues in organizations and communities. The only prerequisites are a willingness to step out of your comfort zone\, to give and receive feedback on your strengths and to learn with and from others. \nExpand Your Toolbox: Develop an intentional toolkit of equity and inclusion practices. Each session will provide you with a tool\, resource\, or practice to implement in your work. \nLocal Community of Practice: We are building a local community of practice where leaders can find alignment and strategize together. \nIndividual Action Project: Each participant will identify an area of work in their organization/community where they wish to advance strategies to strengthen equity and inclusion amidst the socio-political landscape and real-world challenges. We will center local context and systems as they impact organizations and communities. \nSupportive Peer Network: Build authentic connections with peers by centering identity and lived experiences. Each session fosters an environment where participants feel seen\, heard\, and accountable to one another. \nSeries Overview \nSession 1: How We Show Up | October 9 | 9:30 – 11:00 am | VIRTUAL \nThis session aims to deepen participants’ understanding of equity frameworks and build relationships that transcend organizational and geographic barriers. It will unpack how identity and lived experience impact our lens and leadership. Participants will connect with peers in racial affinity groups to explore shared experiences and cultivate deeper interpersonal learning. \nSession 2: Change Work Takes Courage | October 30 | 9:00 am – 12:00 pm | IN-PERSON MATTATUCK MUSEUM\nDelve into actionable strategies for advancing racial equity and inclusion. Develop a vision for action projects to implement at your organization or community. Participants will connect with peers in racial affinity groups to explore shared experiences and cultivate deeper interpersonal learning. \nSession 3: Trust is the Currency of Equity and Inclusion | November 13 | 9:30 – 11:30 am | VIRTUAL \nFocus on the critical role of trust in equity and inclusion initiatives. Address challenges and barriers to building trust and develop a plan of action for your equity strategy. Participants will connect with peers in racial affinity groups to explore shared experiences and cultivate deeper interpersonal learning. \nSession 4: Real Talk: Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Challenges in Greater Waterbury and Litchfield | December 11 | 9:00 am – 12:00 pm | IN-PERSON MATTATUCK MUSEUM\nUnpack race\, diversity\, equity\, and inclusion challenges specific to the local community. Engage in crucial conversations\, present action projects for feedback\, and identify potential collaborations. Participants will connect with peers in racial affinity groups to explore shared experiences and cultivate deeper interpersonal learning. \nLimited spots available. \nAbout the Facilitator: Amarilis Perez Pullen \nAmarilis Pérez Pullen\, MSW\, embodies the essence of transformative leadership as the visionary behind Raíces Coaching and Consulting. She has completed graduate study at Boston College and Teachers’ College. Bring a friend! \n \n  \nIn conversation moderated by Dr. Beatriz Olson\, featured guests Dr. Rebecca Eleck Bruce\, family physician and medical director of Wheeler Health and Angie Matthis\, executive director of Greater Waterbury Health Partnership will explore pressing topics\, challenges and opportunities relating to the health of women and girls in Greater Waterbury and the Litchfield Hills during a fireside chat. Join or renew your participation in the Women’s Giving Circle. \n \nAbout the speakers: \n Dr. Rebecca Eleck Bruce is a family physician and the medical director for Wheeler Health where she supervises medical providers in four federally-qualified community health center locations; she sees patients herself in all four locations. Dr. Bruce provides routine primary care to patients of all ages\, prescribes medication-assisted treatment for substance abuse disorders\, treats HIV and Hepatitis C\, and prescribes gender-affirming hormones. She serves as a trustee of Connecticut Community Foundation\, where she chairs the Health and Environmental Justice Grant Committee. Dr. Bruce also volunteers with the Greater Waterbury YMCA and sometimes teaches yoga at YMCA Camp Mataucha. Dr. Bruce has worked for and with nonprofits in Haiti\, Guatemala\, and Honduras and is passionate about initiatives that extend health care to all. \n  \n  \nAngie Matthis brings over 18 years of experience in community health and wellness to the Greater Waterbury Health Partnership. GWHP is an innovative collaborative nonprofit partnership between hospitals\, health departments and districts\, community health centers and community organizations. Appointed as Executive Director of the Partnership in 2019\, Angie has grown the organization from a team of 1.5 staff to 16 full time staff. Under her direction and funding awards\, GWHP’s operating budget went from a modest 125K to over 1 million dollars in just 3 years. Angie manages all fiscal oversight of the Partnership: grant writing\, contracts\, reporting and program implementation\, strategic planning and initiatives and the Community Health Needs Assessment. \n  \n  \nAbout the Moderator: \n Dr. Beatriz Olson has been a catalyst and champion of integrative medicine for decades. She is a superbly trained-expert in both academic medicine and mind body health. Dr. Olson is board-certified in the fields of Endocrinology\, Metabolism & Diabetes and Internal Medicine\, and has certifications in Age Management Medicine and Feminine Power Transformational Leadership. She graduated from Barnard College\, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons; both her internship and residency in internal medicine and research-clinical fellowship in Endocrinology were at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Olson has authored numerous basic science and clinical articles in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to chapters on various medical texts on nutrition\, women’s endocrine wellness and thyroid. She came to America from Cuba as a political refugee when she was a teen. Created by the Connecticut Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)\, the series provides five introductory-level workshops focusing on theory and practice of fundraising taught by AFP members who are experts in their respective fields. \nThese workshops are designed to help new and established nonprofit organizations raise money more effectively and efficiently. Deepening the Women’s Giving Circle’s current theme of mental health and wellness\, please join us for an interactive\, eye-opening conversation featuring Dr. Nadine Burke Harris’ TED Talk about the long-term impact of childhood trauma. \nWe’ll explore how childhood exposure to adverse events influences brain development as well as a person’s health as an adult— and how it all impacts our region. \n Dr. Nadine Burke Harris is a Canadian-American pediatrician who\, since 2019\, serves as the Surgeon General of California; she is the first person appointed to that position.
