The Maternal Health Equity Blueprint: A Community Convening

Within Connecticut, we are fortunate to have a coalition of committed community leaders working on an urgent public health crisis: Severe Maternal Morbidity Among Black Women.

In November 2025, the Connecticut Health Foundation released a report, Maternal Health Equity: A Blueprint for Connecticut. This dynamic and collaborative report needs to be shared because across Greater Waterbury, Black women are experiencing life-threatening complications from pregnancy, especially postpartum. As conveners, Connecticut Community Foundation and Healthbridge Foundation of Greater Waterbury are bringing you all together with three goals in mind:

1. Hearing and Learning from the leaders who shaped the Blueprint;

2. Learning how organizations and champions are incorporating the Blueprint into their work and improving outcomes for Black women throughout Greater Waterbury;

3. Supporting the formation of new relationships and discovering potential partners to support each other’s work – all in service of meeting the Blueprint’s ambitious but possible goal of reducing severe maternal morbidity among Black women in Greater Waterbury by 50% over the next three years.

We do not do the programmatic work; we do not provide care for nor treat pregnant women; yet, what we can do and should do is serve as a convener and funder of this important work.  We know that there are directors, doulas, midwives, nurses, physicians, professors, and so many others among us who care about Black women, who are addressing structural racism and the other drivers of far too many inequities, and we should convene a space for all of us to get into the same room and learn from each other.
